An interview with Chris Barnes, founder of Broadway Interiors

What inspired your interest in architecture and design?

My family has worked in the industry and from an early age, I have had a keen interest in the building environment, both in terms of design and construction.

How do you begin a project?

Initially, you must listen carefully to the client and understand their vision or wishes. More often than not, my designs are conceived from the initial walk-through of the space, wherein I either secure an instant vision or it comes later over the following days, as I reflect on the project.

What’s essential to every space you design?

Fulfilling the client’s brief to the best of our ability, whilst creating a believable experience for the end user.

What are some key aspects of F & B design that play a big role in your project master plan?

We like to make a lasting impression that stimulates the visitors upon entering a venue so that they want to explore more.

What’s worth investing in when it comes to bathroom design?

A good supplier that can deliver a reputable product that can function as an asset long term, and provide longevity for the end user.

Do you think there is an Emirati (Dubai) design aesthetic?

No, we live in an eclectic society which embraces global design trends and sometimes pushes boundaries. We are lucky to be able to utilise and showcase many different design styles in this region but I think we are market leaders, not market followers!

What is your ultimate goal when it comes to your work? What do you want to be remembered for?

Our ultimate goal is that we continue to produce original, high-quality designs, whilst maintaining our reputation as a reliable, innovative, boutique design consultancy that clients and suppliers want to work with again and again.

Your firm is recognised for exceptional F&B design. What do you think sets your designs apart from others?

We are one of a number of very talented companies in a highly skilled, competitive region, however we have become well known for our creative, original designs with sustainable qualities, where we reuse redundant and obsolete materials in an innovative way, proving that the demand for trendy, casual F&B outlets or cutting edge offices can be achieved without the need for high cost, new materials.

What do you feel is the greatest challenge when it comes to designing the bathroom of a restaurant/bar/night venue?

Ensuring the products perform reliably and have the longevity of use often in circumstances where high traffic and harsh usage take place, particularly in bars and nightclubs.

What is on your wish list among the new BAGNODESIGN products for 2018?
